Most processor cores to date have been general-purpose, which means that they have been designed to handle a wide range of applications with good average performance. This may mean that if you have some special computationally intensive algorithm, such as audio processing, you may need a high-performance core (for example with a SIMD unit, or zero overhead loops) or a high clock frequency to achieve your needs. This may result in exceeding your silicon or power budget.
Something must be done, and fortunately there is RISC-V with its open ISA that lets designers tune not only the microarchitecture, but the ISA itself, to co-develop hardware and software and provide truly optimized performance, power, and area. Codasip’s Studio™ EDA tool and CodAL processor description language are arguably the easiest and most proven way to make such customization.
For many general purposes, a standard RISC-V product is a good fit. However, if you need optimal features and PPA for a certain workload, modifying an existing design is the most convenient way to create a processor tailored for its task. Prevent cyberattacks with CHERI
Building on our Custom Compute approach, we are implementing CHERI technology into our RISC-V cores to provide you with safe and secure solutions. By adding protection against out-of-bound memory accesses to the design, we increase the robustness of our IP to prevent cyberattacks resulting from unsafe memory use and unexpected software defects.
